Our environment is under siege with unprecedented rates of biodiversity and ecosystem services loss never witnessed in recent history. We, as scientists are failing to arm policy- makers with the best information so they can weigh the consequences of their decisions. Meanwhile, although policy-making in climate change has been slow, we must admit that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has made a tremendous impact globally. The same cannot be said for biodiversity and ecosystem services.
However, this is about to change. We would like to bring to your attention the establishment of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity & Ecosystem Services ( IPBES ), an IPCC-like assessment body for biodiversity and ecosystem services.
IPBES will undertake assessments on biodiversity and ecosystem services changes and their impacts on human well-being. Decision makers will have the best science available so they can weigh the consequences of alternative policy options and choose the best strategy.
We are reaching out to the research community to solicit your feedback in the nascent stages of the establishment of IPBES. Your voice is important in shaping the guiding principles of making IPBES a fully functioning body that will make a difference on a global scale. As a starting point we encourage you to participate in a survey on the IPBES process by clicking on this link :
IPBES Assessment Survey
The Japanese government has taken the initiative to support this global survey to gather feedback from the larger scientific community to inform the Second Session of the IPBES Plenary meeting to be held in April 2012. UNU-IHDP and UNU-ISP in collaboration with DIVERSITAS have been commissioned by the Ministry of the Environment of Japan to undertake this survey.
Thank you for your participation!
